Apk-keuring
APK Inspection
The Algemene Periodieke Keuring (APK) is the mandatory annual safety and emission inspection in the Netherlands.
Expat Advice:This is a safety check, not maintenance. The garage must not charge for repairs without your prior permission.
Kleine beurt
Minor Service
Basic routine maintenance usually done every 15,000 km or 1 year. Includes engine oil, oil filter change, and key fluid checks.
Expat Advice:Usually combined with an APK to save on inspection fees.
Grote beurt
Major Service
Comprehensive maintenance typically done every 30,000 km or 2 years. Includes everything in a minor service plus replacing air, cabin, and fuel filters, and spark plugs.
Expat Advice:Always ask for a checklist showing what was actually replaced vs what was just checked.
Remblokken
Brake Pads
The replaceable friction plates that grip the brake discs to slow down your wheels.
Expat Advice:Garages often recommend replacing these when they reach 2-3mm of remaining thickness. Check if the price is per axle (left + right).
Remschijven
Brake Discs / Rotors
The metal discs that rotate with your wheels and are squeezed by the brake pads.
Expat Advice:Discs usually last through two sets of brake pads. If a garage recommends replacing discs, ask them for the measured disc thickness in millimeters.
Draagarm
Control Arm / Wishbone
A critical suspension component that connects the wheel hub to the car frame, allowing wheels to move up and down.
Expat Advice:Usually replaced because the rubber bushings (rubbers) or ball joint (fuseekogel) are worn, causing play (speling) in the wheel.
Schokdemper
Shock Absorber
Suspension parts that absorb bouncy road motion to keep tires firmly planted on the road.
Expat Advice:Always replace in pairs (front or rear) to maintain stable vehicle handling.
Distributieriem
Timing Belt
A rubber belt synchronizing the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft rotation. If it snaps, it will cause catastrophic engine damage.
Expat Advice:Must be replaced strictly based on manufacturer intervals (usually 5-10 years or 100k-180k km). Replacing this is highly labor-intensive.
Bougies
Spark Plugs
Electrical plugs that ignite the fuel-air mixture in petrol engines.
Expat Advice:Usually replaced during a Grote Beurt. Diesels do not have these; they use Gloeibougies (glow plugs) instead.
Luchtfilter
Engine Air Filter
Filters dust and dirt out of the air entering your engine to prevent damage and maintain fuel efficiency.
Expat Advice:A very easy part to replace yourself in 5 minutes, saving garage labor fees.
Interieurfilter / Pollenfilter
Cabin / Pollen Filter
Filters the air coming through your dashboard vents to keep dust, pollen, and smells out of the cabin.
Expat Advice:Replace annually, especially if you have allergies or notice window fogging.
Motorolie
Engine Oil
The vital fluid that lubricates, cleans, and cools the moving metal parts inside your engine.
Expat Advice:Ensure the garage uses the exact oil specification (e.g. 5W-30 synthetic) recommended by your car manufacturer.
Koelvloeistof
Engine Coolant / Antifreeze
Fluid circulating through the engine to absorb heat and keep the engine operating at the correct temperature.
Expat Advice:Never open the cap when the engine is hot. Check level regularly to prevent overheating.
Remvloeistof
Brake Fluid
Hydraulic fluid that transmits pressure from your brake pedal to the brake pads.
Expat Advice:Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. It should be flushed and replaced every 2 years.
Uitlijnen
Wheel Alignment
Adjusting the angles of your vehicle wheels to make sure they are pointing correctly relative to each other and the road.
Expat Advice:Highly recommended after suspension work (like control arms or shocks) or if the steering wheel pulls to one side.
Banden
Tires
Rubber tires. The Netherlands has seasonal winter (winterbanden) and summer (zomerbanden) tire swaps.
Expat Advice:Legal minimum tread depth in NL is 1.6mm. However, winter tires lose traction below 4mm and summer tires below 3mm.
